I5 Laptop HP Pavilion dm4-1065dx review
The Pavilion dm4-1065dx has a LED display that measures 14.0 inches in dimension and has a resolution of 1366×768 pixels. The screen is bright enough and movies are quite good. It runs on the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium. It is powered by a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5 M430 processor and an Intel HD HM55 graphics processor. It uses a DDR3 SDRAM of 4 GB that can be upgraded to 8 GB and a 7200 rpm hard drive of 640 GB, which is a good size hard drive for all your digital pictures, music and more. The 5-in-1 media reader supports Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO and xD-Picture Card formats. The system comes with the Mobile Intel HM55 Express Chipset. The 6-cell lithium ion battery pack can give you 6.5 hours of unplugged power.
The Pavilion uses a dm4-1065dx LED display that measures 14 inches with a resolution of 1366×768 pixels. The screen is driven by the Intel HD graphics system which can use 64MB-1696MB dynamically allocated shared graphics memory. Shared graphics means you may experience slow downs when doing graphically intensive tasks like games. The display is good with decent text and icon sizes and it is suitable for watching movies.
Intel Core i5 processor offers a snappy performance to the system for working on normal applications, Web-browsing and general multitasking. For most of the users the performance by the system will be more than sufficient and will offer immense functional speeds.
The keyboard on dm4-1065dx has the same widely spaced flat-topped keys. It is nicely laid out. The touch pad is similar to what on HP’s high-end Envy systems. It’s larger than most, and the matte-black surface is infinitely superior to the sticky mirrored pads on the past several generations of Pavilions. More…

I bought this explicitly for using as a budget HTPC. I didn’t need Blu-Ray or long battery life because I intended to park it on my components and plug it into my big screen via HDMI. I did need a computer with good graphics and a pc that was powerful enough to run flash and HD video without hiccuping. Picked this up yesterday and by the time I had the OS decrappified of all of the junk software they add to these budget computers I was up and running and connected to my entertainment center and watching youtube on the big screen in no time.
I’ll leave some updates later but here are a few important things to keep in mind.
1. There is a little button above the touchpad that turns it on and off. Make sure it’s on before you freak out.
2. You have to touch the wireless icon in order to turn on the wireless card. It glows red and changes color to blue when it’s on and it’s touch sensitive.

To summarize my thoughts, this computer provides tremendous value and relatively strong computing power for its price range. There are a lot of little features (such as the 7200-rpm hard drive, e-SATA port, dedicated graphics memory, etc.) that aren’t typically found on a notebook in this price range. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy this model again.
Pros:
+ Relatively powerful AMD Turion x2 Dual Core processor at 2.2 ghz
+ Dedicated graphics card
+ 4GB RAM
+ Windows 7 64-bit is a tremendous improvement over slow Windows Vista
+ Nice blend of portability and usability
+ 7200-rpm, 320GB hard drive
+ e-SATA interface allows you to take advantage of faster external hard drives
+ HDMI outCons:
- No bluetooth
- Uses DDR2 RAM instead of DDR3 RAM like Intel Core Duo 2

Reviews for HP Pavilion DV4-2161NR

Pros:
- Excellent design
- 4GB Ram, enough for most tasks
- 500GB hard drive, for me that’s enough for now
- Small size and little weight (even lighter when DVD is removed, which is an excellent feature in itself)
- Windows 7 (better than Vista, we’ll see about XP)
- EXCELLENT PRICE
Cons:
- Battery life is about 2 hours, bound to decrease within 6 months, not on par with most other laptops this size.
- Touchpad really has a mind of its own on ocassion.
- Glossy design is beautiful, but it’s also a fingerprint magnet
- Opening it is a cumbersome task, not really bad, but a little.
- Windows 7 “64bit” – Some old programs I use refuse to work in such environment.

HP DV4-2161NR reviews By Jessica L. Milbrett (OR, USA)
I’ve owned my computer for almost a week now, and I’m absolutely loving it. For the money I almost bought an Hp with a T6600 processor and 320GB hard drive etc etc. I bought this for the same price as the other hp and got MORE memory and a better processor. Why wouldn’t you want an upgrade of 180 GB hard drive for free? If your a student and like to have lots of music, videos and play light gaming and still have tons of room for your homework and projects, this is a great computer.
I also love how its 14″ monitor, so I can take it anywhere and fit it into any bag. It has a very sleek and glossy exterior. A little bit of work to keep clean, but that’s no reason not to buy a computer. The speakers are great for a laptop. I was actually surprised how clear sounds and music was. As with most HP laptops, you get the lightscribe burner, which is great, but it also comes with a disc replacement thing so if you don’t care to use a disc drive, you can remove it and save some weight. But really it doesn’t weigh that much.
The only downfall I have with this computer is the slightly low battery life. I think a little bit of that might be my fault cause I just plugged in and played rather than letting the battery charge fully first before I started playing with it.
Great laptop for the price.
HP DV4-2161NR reviews By J. Hamilton (Ludington, MI USA)
I’ve had the HP DV4-2161NR for a few weeks now. Super fast, no problem running multiple programs at once. The screen size is perfect, not too big and not too small, and the weight is perfect as well. The only problem I have with this laptop is the mouse pad area. I guess as with any laptop, the mouse seems to have a mind of it’s own a lot. Sometimes the mouse won’t even move at all when you are moving your finger on the pad. It jumps around and randomly selects things when you didn’t want it to. I’ve noticed the same problem with my friends HP laptops as well. This is the only problem I have had with the computer so far though. I would still recommend this computer to anybody who wants a good quality HP product. More…
How an i3 would perform for home video editing?
The i3 would be fine for video editing though the i5 would be slightly better. It was hard to dig up solid numbers but the i5-430M looks to be about 2-8% faster than i3-330M on video related tasks (most of this is probably because the i5-430M is about 100mHz faster). Both outperform a similarly clocked Core2 duo by 20-55% in video editing and burning (depending on the exact task). Video editing is one of the key consumer features Intel targets for acceleration each generation so each new CPU architecture should bring you a performance jump. You are also going to see a big gain over the Core2 because the i3 and i5 have hyperthreading which video editing can make good use of. The integrated Intel HD graphics are fine for video editing. The only applications that will greatly benefit from a discrete video chip are 3D (games and CAD).
HP DV6 models DV6 buy advice
- For home users who aren’t gamers you can save about $100 if you go with the HP Pavilion DV6-2150US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) which combines a Core i3 with Win 7 Premium and a 6 cell battery. The performance for non-gaming software will be very close to the more expensive i5 models and you’ll save money by going with Win 7 Premium and a smaller battery.
- If you need good battery life, run higher end software, or like to game a bit go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2170US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) which combines the Core i5 with the 12 cell battery. The Intel graphics aren’t the best but it’s a big improvement over past products. This is the model I think has the best balance of features.
- If gaming matters more than battery life you should probably look at other laptop lines but if you are sold on the DV6 go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2190US which has a quad CPU Core i7 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M graphics. It’s only got a 6 cell battery and that CPU and graphics are going to drain it quickly. On the plus side it’s the only model in this group with gigabit ethernet (most home users will be fine with 10/100 ethernet [which is more than enough for several computers surfing the web] but if you want or need 10/100/1000 ethernet only the higher end DV6 models have it).
- If you have a lot of older software consider the HP Pavilion DV6-2157SB Small Business Editionwhich comes with Windows 7 Pro (which can run older software in a WinXP kernel). It has a Core i3 and a 6 cell battery. It also has a different finish (“Plaid Mocha”) but I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment on it.
To wrap it all up: you can always buy more features for more money but if you are looking for a laptop with some higher-end features and upscale build quality this is an excellent choice. HP spent money in the right places and has created a high-end laptop at a mid-tier price. I think the HP Pavilion DV6-2150US 15.6-Inch Laptop is one of the better values out there today but I prefer the features offered in the HP Pavilion DV6-2170US. If you are a student you may want to check out HPs “Academy” program which offers student discounts (it can be hard to find on HP’s web site – just search for “HP Academy”).
